Roof Shingling
On December 28th, I went to buy roof shingles. I had done my research
with my Dad in November and found the color and style that I wanted at
Bradco in Lowell where I had purchased my roof shingles for my old house
there last year.
As I entered the store a bald man rudely asked if I could be helped. I
told him the purpose of my visit. He told me he couldn’t help me. He was
a “wholesaler” for contractors. I told him I was a repeat customer and
that my brother is my contractor. He VERY rudely told me to come back
with my brother. He then turned his back to me and answered phone calls.
After a few minutes he turned around with a look like 'You're still
here!' on his face. I took this opportunity to tell him that I had been
to his business many times, with my brother, father or husband and had
always been treated very nicely. Now, because I am a woman alone, I am
treated with a sexist attitude and disrespect! I knew exactly what I
wanted to buy – it would have been an easy sale. He told me he is used
to contractors and construction workers coming in, not women! So, I
left. Sexual discrimination IS alive and well in the new millennium!
I didn’t buy my shingles there. I bought them at Jackson Lumber, the
staff is always very happy to help me or answer questions. My sales rep
at Jackson Lumber, Jim Clark, ALWAYS, promptly returns my phone calls,
treats me with respect and as an equal. I highly recommend him and his
company.
